Kara Freise

Kara Bio Pic

Hello! I’m Kara Freise and my passion for therapy rests on the belief that we all have the capacity to heal; that our brains and bodies want to innately move towards a state of mental well being. Essential to my approach is identifying the strengths and values of my clients, as well as working to recognize the ways in which currently problematic “symptoms” have been previously adaptive. I strive to incorporate the understanding that individuals are affected by and struggle with social and cultural factors that impact mental health. I emphasize the personal power and autonomy of my clients and strive to be genuine, authentic, and collaborative in our work together.

I graduated from Columbia University with a dual Master of Education and Master of Arts in Psychological Counseling, and a bachelor's degree in psychology and a focus in cognitive neuroscience.  I've had the great opportunity to work in a variety of settings and populations. Working with Home and Children Family Services in Brooklyn, New York, I helped adults with serious mental illness with integrated rehabilitation, treatment, and support services. Some of my child and adolescent experience includes being a counselor providing school and clinic-based mental health treatment to children from ages 3 to 19. I’ve also provided individual and group therapy to adults, individual therapy to children and adolescents, and family therapy. With my specialization in trauma, I’m excited to offer Eye-Movement Rapid Desensitization (EMDR) for adults and teens, play therapy and combination play therapy and EMDR for children and families. My evidenced-based approaches include motivational interviewing, dialectical behavioral therapy, emotion-focused family therapy, and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy.

I’m excited to join the team at Innovative Trauma Therapy, as we are “real people'' first and foremost, and you will be treated with care, respect, genuineness, and competence. We truly reflect a culture of trauma-informed care and a holistic, wellness-oriented view of mental health.

As an individual, I’m a passionate advocate for education and the arts. My inspiration for becoming a therapist began with studying music therapy, which I continue to use creatively in some of my therapy sessions today. I’m personally connected with a nonprofit organization that focuses on enhancing educational opportunities for homeless youth and children. My personal story includes early adversity and hardship, much like the clients I serve. I can be found blowing off steam at a rock concert or struggling to keep up with my three dogs. I consider it an honor and privilege to walk alongside my clients on their journey. I’m a Texas Board Certified Licensed Professional Counselor Associate supervised by Ashley Cook Rovira, LPC-S here at Innovative Trauma Therapy.
